Building Enclosure Testing (Air Barrier Testing)

Worker with safety gear using a laptop near a blower door.

What is Building Enclosure Testing?

BET is a non-destructive test that determines:

1) How airtight your building envelope is, and

2) If it is leaking, how much and where?

We perform BET per the testing requirements of your project. These will be detailed in the project specifications or code requirements, which may refer to ASTM E779, ASTM E1827 or ASTM E3158 or even ANSI/RESNET/ICC 380.   Leak detection is performed per ASTM E1186.

Planning your Air Barrier Test

Once contracted, Reynolds Engineering plans the testing per project specifications or owner request. There is a lot of coordination of trades to make this test happen & having a clear and defined path helps the date of testing go smoothly.

Thermographic Imaging

During the testing (when required by the specification) thermographic imaging is taken of all envelope surfaces.  These images can provide a lot of information that our normal vision can't see.

Localized smoke testing

We use localized smoke to watch air current inside rooms, especially around problem areas. Being able to see those currents helps us to find the issue more often than not.
